The county town is Selkirk, Sir Walter Scott was for many years Sheriff of the county and a monument to him was erected in the market place in Selkirk.
Agriculture plays a major part in the economy of the county along with tourism and there are many old castle and abbey ruins in both Selkirkshire and the adjacent counties, Galashiels was a burgh (partly) within the county and is the major town in the area in modern times.
