Ashridge Monument, erected in 1832 to the Duke of Bridgewater submitted by Jess

Hertfordshire

County town: Hertford

Other major towns: Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans

Parts of Hertfordshire hide in the beautiful Chiltern Hills, which run through part of the west of the county into Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. In the east the new towns of Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth Garden City and Watford are highly industrialised whilst in the west of the county, there are many smaller towns and villages which are agricultural in their nature. Residents of the smaller west Hertfordshire towns and villages are known locally as 'Hedgehogs'.

Being close to London, the county has some of the finest examples of traditional English country homes within its borders. Hatfield House, Knebworth House and Brocket Hall all date back centuries whilst in the market town of Berkhamsted a Norman castle still stands.

Graeme Green was both born and educated in Berkhamsted.
