Double Wedding 1890 | ||
The dress of the bride on the left was in cream cashmere, trimmed with Beugaline silk and orange blossoms. Her long tulle veil was fixed in place with orange blossoms. Her bridesmaids wore dresses of electric blue, trimmed with cream velvet with white Leghorn hats.
The bride on the right wore a cream cashmere dress, trimmed with Brussels lace and orange blossoms. Her tulle veil was crowned with a wreath of orange blossoms. Her bridesmaids wore dresses of heliotrope cashmere and cream velvet, with hats to match. |
1891 - 1900

1905 | ||
My Great grand uncles cousins wedding, 1905 Scarborough Yorkshire. This was sent to me via the brides 3rd great granddaughter. |
1906 | ||
The girl on the right (Adela Rose Steel) is 11, her own wedding picture is below under 1929. |
1906 | ||
Bride and groom seated centre, one of the twins, (Amelia Steel) has her own wedding picture below under 1922. |
1906 | ||
The old man, a retired shepherd holds the photograph of one of his daughters who was unable to be there. |
1909 | ||
1911 - 1920
1912 | ||
English wedding in 1912. |
1913 | ||
My uncles aunt Maud Gilligans wedding to Robert Fisher in York 1913ish. |
1914 | ||
1917 | ||
1917 | ||
My Grandparents were married at St Johns Parish Church, Ipswich, on 5 March 1917.
This was typical dress for a working class wedding. If the groom was in the forces then he would wear his uniform not a suit |
1917 | ||
The bridesmaids are wearing very simply cut dresses and
the elder ones are wearing mopcaps instead of hats. |
1921 - 1930
1922 | ||
Amelia and Percy were married at East Wittering, Sussex in 1922, it was a double wedding, her sister Annie married on the same day. Amelia was 25. |
1922 | ||
Annie and Thomas at East Wittering. It was a double wedding - her sister married the same day. Annie was an older bride at 33, her choice of outfit is quite different from that of her 25 year old sister. |
1922 | ||
1923 | ||
The wedding of my Great Aunt Elsie Slater to William (Bill) Smith in 1923. My Grandfather William aged 27 - the only one of the bride's brothers present - is seated right & the bride's parents Robert Slater & Emily (nee Howard) on the left. The other ladies & girls are the bride's sisters. |
1927 | ||
Hilda was my paternal grandmother and is pictured here with her husband on their wedding day in 1927. They were married at St. Michael's Church in Eastbourne. Thomas, who worked as a chauffeur, died of nephritis on Christmas Day 1936. |
1928 | ||
My grandparents Emma Mckegg and Thomas Kellert 1928 York. |
1929 | ||
My parental grandparents group photo |
1929 | ||
Again my paternal grandparents - I love this photo just for itself |
1929 | ||
Rose and Bert outside her father's pub at East Wittering, she had been in service, and he was the village carpenter. She was 34 at the time of her marriage. |
1929 | ||
1930 | ||
1930 | ||
From the newspaper report of the wedding: "The bride looked charming as she entered the church on her father's arm. Her tasteful gown was of white crepe satin, with a skirt composed of silver lace, and a flared satin train, underlined in shell pink crepe de chine, falling from the waist. A beautiful veil of Honiton lace, which fell to form a long train, was held in place by a pretty headdress of orange blossom. The bride carried a sheaf of roses, carnations and erica, completing a delightful toilet.
The bridesmaids, Misses *** and **** ******, looked smart in frocks of eau de nil georgette, with a draped bodice to give a panel effect, and overlapping flounces embroidered in gold, falling to the heels of gold shoes. Argyle hats of gold shaded crinoline and fancy straw, trimmed with black velvet flowers on the side, were worn.
The flower girl, Miss **** *****, was daintily frocked in frilled net and crepe de chine to match the colour scheme of the bridesmaids. A cap of pearls was worn and a basket of tinted roses and ferns carried.
|
1931 - 1940
1932 | ||
My Grandparents in 1932. William Liddle Lackey and Hilda Wood (center). It is believed to have been 3 weddings at the same time, but I'm not sure as the other 2 girls are both wearing the same outfits, hats and shoes. The wedding took place at The Parish Church of St John's, Peterborough. |
1932 | ||
The bridesmaids wear bias cut dresses which drape beautifully. The bridegroom's spats are just visible. |
1933 | ||
1933 | ||
1937 | ||
My Father in Law Ronald Leslie Pusey and his bride Ada Marjorie Thomas 1st July 1937 |
1939 | ||
English wedding in 1937. Note the long trails on the bouquet. |
1939 | ||
Most of the people here were employed in the Lancashire cotton mills. |
1941 - 1950
1941 | ||
The marriage of my parents Lawrence Gleaves and Anne Taylor. |
1942 | ||
My parents wedding in North London. Working class and register office. Bear in mind, it was war time and clothing coupons had to be saved for the big day |
1942 | ||
Wedding day.Bath, Somerset November 1942 |
1942 | ||
My Mum is the bridesmaid with the lacy dress. |

This elderly working class lady (78) has not moved with the times, wearing an almost ankle length dress. Age and social background should be taken into account when attempting to date photographs. |
1951 - 1960
1956 | ||
Good solid upper middle class - both parents professional people: Engineer and Doctor. Groom an Air Commodore but made the wedding strictly non uniform as there wouldn't be enough room for everybody's swords, sticks and caps! |
1958 | ||
My Aunt Norahs wedding to Thomas Simmons in 1958 Liverpool. |
