Herefordshire is in the West Midlands region of England . It borders Shropshire to the north, Worcestershire to the east, Gloucestershire to the south east and Wales to the west.

The county is mainly an agricultural area and is especially well known for its fruit and cider production.

The area around Ross-on-Wye was at the centre of major conflict due to its strategic position on the Welsh border. Offa's Dyke, a great earthen ditch was dug in 784AD to divide England and Wales and over the following centuries a line of motte and bailey castles were built along the borders as defences against these raids. One of the surviving castles, Goodrich Castle is open to visitors.

Hereford Cathedral contains the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world dating from the 13th century which was restored in the late 20th century. It also contains the world famous Chained Library.

Famous inhabitants include Nell Gwynne, mistress of King Charles II of England and Peter Scudamore the jockey.
