St Oswin became a parish church in 1902, the foundation stone was laid on New Year's Day 1885. The church is one of many throughout the region designed by R J Johnson. Construction was paid for by George Hedley and his intention was the building should be a memorial to his parents, (his father William was a local pioneer of the railways). The Hedley connections continue inside, the chancel screen, organ case and screen and the reredos are attributed to Ralph Hedley, he is also credited with creating the choir stalls in St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle.
