County Laois was created in 1556 by Mary I of England as Queen's County. Laois received its current Irish language name following the Irish War of Independence although is known historically as a place where a large number of Quakers settled, and is now home to a Quaker museum, as well as Donaghmore Workhouse and Famine Museum, which remembers the great famine. (1853 - 1886)
